Description |
Carved female face mask in the shape of a long oval with an applied coiffure of finely braided hair divided into two sections down the sides of the forehead, behing the modeled ears and past the cheeks. Modeled facial features include slit eyes surrounded by thin metal strips, a protruding nose and mouth with the lips slightly parted revealing applied animal teeth. The upper lip has a small strip of red fabric applied to the surface. The earlobes are pierced with single holes threaded with bright red yarn. Finely burnished and blackened surface. African, Dan peoples. Africa, Cote d'ivoire, 19th-20th century. |
