Description |
Baule face mask. Wood, black color, extensive use patina. The superstructure consists of a long neck surmounted by a sculpted head. This part of the sculpture measures 8.5" in height. A double line of incised triangles, running such that they form a trapezoid, and create a stylized hair line above the forehead. Parallel linear excrescences are present in the lower middle forehead between the arches of the eye brows. The mask has an elongated nose, arching eyebrows, oval eyes and puckered lips. The mask is extensivley patinated, especially in areas which would have been touched during use. Dates from late 19th to early 20th century. |
