Description |
Mayan vessel in the form of a bird effigy. Globular-bodied vessel with flared rim A fully modeled head of a bird emerges from the body of the vessel just below wide flaring spout. The bird's head is modeled and incised with large, round eyes and an open beak. Clawed feet on on the bottom. Wings and tail etched on sides. Ceramic, clay with orange slip decoration. Classic period, 800-1000 C.E. Pre-Columbian, Guatemala. Object records also state the time period as 300-900 C.E. The object record appraisal description states, "Globular bodied vessel, tall and wide flaring spout. Repousse features of a standing bird are on the body, with the head emergent and fully formed, with large round eyes and open moouth.
