Description |
Dogon crocodile mask (wada kakada). A very rare Dogon crocodile mask in excellent condition. Dates back to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Wood, blonde color, covered with faded black, red and white dot-like designs. On the sides of the head, there are larger faded color designs in the form of circles which are black, white and red. A crest of triangular forms in a single line run from the back of the head to the end of the upper jaw. These triangles are alternatively faded white, red, and black. Above the brow on either side are small indigenously forged iron discs attached with forged thin nails. The edges of the upper and lower jaws are pierced with matching small rounc holes through which stalks were once inserted to represent the teeth of the crocodile. |
